My Favorite Tools and Notions ++ Amazon Influencer Page

About a year and half ago, my cousin had asked me to put a list of quilting related supplies she needed to get started quilting.  I curated a whole list of my favorite tools and notions that I thought she would need to get started (and make her quilting life easier) and was looking for a way to share more broadly my list.  I figured that if the list helped my cousin then it might be helpful to others.

Enter Amazon and their Influencer Program...

Amazon now has an influencer program where I can create a webpage to share my quilting essentials list.  I have been able to add comments and tips to each item so you can read why I like the item or how I use it.

While I do not think that I am an "influencer", I hope that sharing some of my favorite tools will help others save money as they will not have to test brand after brand like I did.

The influencer program is an affiliate program, which means that if you click on the link and wind up purchasing something, I will get a small percentage of the sale (this does not affect the price you pay).

Want to see some of my favorite tools and notions?  Everything on the list I own and have used and love.  You can click right here to get to my influencer list.

I had a number of people asking about my backup / travel machine, the Brother CS6000i and I promise to post a full review on it soon.

Flock of Geese was originally published as part of the 2018 Quilter's Planner and know as a stand alone pattern, I have expanded the instructions for both a baby and lap sized quilt.

Flock of Geese is a modern take on the traditional Birds in the Air quilt block designed for advanced beginner / intermediate level quilters.  To create the quilt top, I pulled various teal, green, blue, and yellow colored printed from my stash.

I assembled the quilt top with the blocks on-point, giving a different look to the traditional Birds in the Air design.  I quilted Flock of Geese with randomly spaced diagonal lines to form a cross-hatch pattern using Aurifil 50 wt in white (color 2024). The diagonal lines are in a variety of spaciongs from about 3/8" to 1".  I like the texture the quilting gives, but I must admit that it was very time consuming.

Isn't this a fun plus sign design? I had this design sketched out in my pattern book since when I began brainstorming quilts for my plus sign book but could not decide the best way to piece it.

When I was revisited the design I figured out the quilt could be made using only 2 block types! Once I figured out how to construct the quilt, it came together quickly and easily.

Next came the fun part, the quilting. I decided to do some custom quilting in this quilt, using a different design and matching Aurifil thread for each layer of the plus sign. I picked the 50 wt Aurifil thread, I find it to be the perfect weight for dense quilting.

I originally designed this pattern made the quilt and pattern for the International Association of Quilters and am happy to be able to release it as a stand alone pattern.

If you love this plus sign design and would like more, you can check out my book, Modern Plus Sign Quilts for another 16 patterns! (affiliate link)

Child's Play Quilts Book Hop

Welcome to my stop on the Child's Play Quilts Book Hop.  Child's Play Quilts was written by Stacey Day, another Stash Author, and contains 20 different baby quilts designs.

The book focuses on using your stash and is divided into two sections, 10 applique patterns and 10 traditionally pieced patterns, with each of the designs being shown in both warm and cool colors.  Child's Play Quilts has a great resource section in the front to help organize your stash as well as instructions for basic quilt making skills.

There were a number of quilts I was interested in making and I chose Fox Hunt, a traditionally pieced design.  My co-worker is expecting his second child in May so I figured that I could make Fox Hunt for them.  Here is the version from the book:

He and his wife are not finding out the sex of their baby, so I picked out some red, black, and mustard prints for the fabrics.  It kind of reminded me of Mickey and Minnie mouse so hopefully they will like it.

The quilt came together pretty quickly and I love the addition of the fox faces to a couple of the blocks that Stacey teaches in the book.  I used some black Aurifil thread in the thick 12wt to embroider the eyes and nose.

I used one of my favorite (and quickest) quilting design, the meander, on the quilt and then finished the binding completely by machine (both for speed and for wash durability).

I will be gifting this quilt next month to my co-worker at his baby shower, I hope he likes it!  Have you made a gender neutral quilt recently?  What colors did you use?

Thanks Stacey for including me in your book hop!  Hop over to her her blog, Stacey in Stitches, for a chance to win a copy of the book and you can purchase a copy in her Etsy shop or at Amazon (affiliate link).

Quilter's Planner Sampler ++ January Through March

I had the privilege of designing the Quilter's Planner Sampler for 2018 and I am happy to be sewing along with the quilt along!

The sampler contains instructions for 12 different blocks and 2 different settings, an on-point setting and a traditional setting.  All of the instructions can be found in the pattern magazine that is included with a Quilter's Planner and is now also available in the Quilter's Planner Magazine (affiliate link) which contains the sampler and 13 additional patterns for only $12!

The quilt along is structured for one block each month (if you are making the on-point design you will have to make doubles of a few of your favorite designs to get to the 17 blocks in the quilt) with Facebook and Instagram link ups for prizes each month.

Here are my blocks for January, February, and March..

 February

March

I have decided to use the Amalfi collection by Rifle & Co. for Cotton & Steel, using mostly the blue and green prints, which Cotton & Steel generously provided me.

Just as a reminder, here are the two quilt layouts...

Day 9 ++ Modern Plus Sign Quilts Book Hop ++ Intertwined and Bear Claw Plus

Welcome to the ninth day of the Modern Plus Sign Quilts book hop! Today, we will be sharing the last two quilts, Intertwined and Bear Claw Plus as hosting a giveaway of a thread collection generously donated by Aurifil.

Intertwined

Intertwined is a twin sized quilt design with nested plus signs that I designed and Paige pieced and quilted.  Here's a fun back story on making this quilt...

Paige and I wanted this quilt to be for a boy and when we saw Latifah Saafir's “Grafic” collection (the first screenprint collection of Me + You by Hoffman Fabrics) we knew that was the right collection for the quilt. I was originally supposed to make this quilt but when the fabric arrived at Paige's house, she called me up to let me know that the prints were too fabulous and that she was going to make it :) I got half of the leftover fabrics so I was still very happy.

The batting was Warm & White, and Aurifil threads were used for the piecing and quilting.

Debbie, Laura, and Beth used the Intertwined pattern to make some new quilts and items, please check out their blogs...

Bear Claw Plus
Bear Claw Plus is a lap sized quilt and one of the more time consuming designs (due to all of the half square triangles and seams to match).  This is another of the team effort quilts with me designing it, Paige piecing it, and Johellen George doing the fabulous quilting.  I love the Bear Claw Plus design and how the secondary patterns emerge when the blocks are put together.

The fabrics came from Robert Kaufman, the batting was Warm & White, and Aurifil threads were used for the piecing.

Janice and Joanne used the Bear Claw Plus pattern to make some new quilts and items, please check out their versions...

Giveaway

Today's giveaway is for a 10 piece small spool collection of Moonshine by Tula Pink for Aurifil. Many thanks to Aurifil for sponsoring this prize.

March Madness - Mad for Solids 2018

It's March Madness time, quilting style :)
PB Studio Fabrics is sponsoring a fun game called Mad for Solids.  16 bloggers (including myself) selected a palette of 8 colors from Inspired by Fabric's Painter's Palette Solids and then the bundles complete head to head with other bundles for the most votes until one of the bundles is named the winner.

The event started Monday and my bundle is in the "game" today.   You have 3 ways to vote (you can vote in one or all of the ways):

I had such fun going through all of their solids and playing with different combinations.

My launching point for this bundle was spring and the Easter holiday.  We had a cold winter (by South Carolina standards) and I was more than ready to start picking some bright and happy colors to welcome spring.  My colors were...

049 Coral
062 Pale Aqua
054 Tangerine
002 Crimson
068 Rosebud
072 Honeydew
165 Paradise
050 Cadet

I have been doing a lot of paper piecing so I thought that making a fun spring mini would be a great little project to break up the paper piecing and use these great colors.

I used my daughter's art book to trace out some different shaped flowers in each of the colors and centered them on some Painter's Palette Solid in white.  Then I added dense quilting over the flowers in both directions with some wider spaced quilting in the border areas.

I have decided to gift the mini quilt to my coworker who's husband is battling leukemia right now. She deserves something bright and happy right now.

My bundle Spring Fling is up against the beautiful bundle called Winter Break by Jacqueline Skarritt.

The bundle with the most votes advances to the next level so please vote (remember, one vote per social media site so you can vote 3 times)

Day 8 ++ Modern Plus Sign Quilts Book Hop ++ Celestial and Pinwheel Plus

Welcome to the eighth day of the Modern Plus Sign Quilts book hop!   Today, we will be sharing Celestial and Pinwheel Plus as well as hosting a giveaway of two charm packs.

Celestial

Celestial is the biggest quilt in the book, finishing at a queen size.  The quilt uses large 24" blocks though, so only 16 blocks are needed for the whole quilt!  Celestial was hung in the C&T booth at QuiltCon and when it gets back I plan on using this quilt for my bed :)  Johellen George worked her quilting magic on Celestial creating a large meandering square design.

The fabrics used for this version were various Cotton & Steel prints on a background of Cotton Supreme fabric in indigo (a great dark blue), all from RJR Fabrics.  The batting used was Warm & White and Aurifil threads were used for the piecing.

Anja, Kate, and Sue used the Celestial pattern to make some new quilts and items, please check out their blogs...

Anja @ Anja Quilts

Pinwheel Plus

I designed Pinwheel Plus to be a marriage between plus signs and pinwheels.  I love how in this design the plus signs are nested with the pinwheels so it is difficult to see how the quilt top is pieced together, can you figure it out?

There are a lot of points to match (and half square triangles to make) in this quilt so Paige and I ranked this quilt as one of the more time consuming to make.  Even before I had finished piecing the top, I knew that I wanted a the whimsical double loop design that Johellen had quilted on quilt for me in the past so she quilted the wonderful quilting on Pinwheel Plus.

The fabrics in this quilt top are Michael Miller Cotton Couture solids in Coin and White (Coin is one of my favorite grays, it has an undertone of brown in it so it pairs so well with pinks) as well as various pink prints.  The batting was Warm & White and Aurifil threads were used for the piecing.

Carole and Alison used the Pinwheel Plus pattern to make some new quilts and items, please check out their versions...

Today's giveaway is for two (2) charm packs of FreeSpirit Essentials.

Day 7 ++ Modern Plus Sign Quilts Book Hop ++ Message in a Bottle and Cute as a Button

Welcome to the seventh day of the Modern Plus Sign Quilts book hop!   Today, we will be sharing Message in a Bottle and Cute as a Button as well as hosting a giveaway of a thread collection generously donated by Aurifil.

Message in a Bottle
Message in a Bottle is a quick and easy baby quilt with a really bold look.  I had such fun picking out fabrics for this design, you can really use some focal or larger scale prints in this design because the fabric pieces are so large.

If you like this design and want a larger quilt, you could actually make four of the baby quilts, then piece them into one large queen/king size quilt.

The fabrics were from Zen Chic and Bonnie and Camille for Moda, the batting was Warm & White, and Aurifil threads were used for the piecing and quilting.

Tish, Judy, and Emily used the Message in a Bottle pattern to make some new quilts and items, please check out their blogs...

Cute as a Button

Cute as a Button is an applique pattern that was designed, sewn, and quilted by Paige.  I love the adorable little plus sign buttons in this design and the colors are perfect for a baby quilt.

The fabrics in this version of Cute as a Button from the Sun Print 2015 and Sun Print 2016 collections by Alison Glass for Andover Fabrics, Inc., the batting was Warm & White, and Aurifil threads were used for the piecing and quilting.

Wanda, Karen, and Katherine used the Cute as a Button pattern to make some new quilts and items, please check out their versions...

Giveaway

Today's giveaway is for a 10 piece small spool collection of Seventy Six by Alison Glass for Aurifil.  Many thanks to Aurifil for sponsoring this prize.

To enter, simply use the rafflecopter: (if you are reading this post via e-mail, you may need to click over to the blog for the rafflecopter box to appear below). Giveaway runs from March 20th through 8 pm EST March 27th and is open worldwide.
